HISTORY

The Carbondale Holiday Tournament hit the hardwood in1964. Setting the stage to showcase the basketball talent of Illinois, teams from southern, central and northern Illinois all took their shot at the championship .  For years the tournament hosted state champions of the past...and the future.  In the early 1980s, the tournament grew across state lines to attract more teams.  The best of the best from Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri made the trek to southern Illinois and raised the competitive bar.  Future NCAA and NBA players and coaches made appearances at the tournament on their way to the big time. Center court at the SIU Arena, now the Banterra Center, gave high school players an unparalleled competitive experience. And though it all the fans cheered each generation of excellence.  The Carbondale Holiday Tournament draws on a rich history of high school hoops, and celebrates the rich tradition of Illinois basketball.

Our Support

Mr. Paul Bates loved Terrier Basketball. Mr. Bates's son Dylan was the staring Point Guard for the 1994 Terrier Basketball Team.  The Terriers took 2nd in State that year and it only grew his love for Carbondale Terrier Basketball.  Paul chronicles that amazing season in his book, Vicarious Thrills: A Championship Season of High School Basketball.  He also was the head scorekeeper for the Terrier Basketball Team for many years.  His love of Basketball was evident.  He cared deeply for Terrier Basketball and The Carbondale Holiday Tournament.  We are pleased to name this year’s Carbondale Holiday tournament in memory of Paul.  Carbondale Community High School is pleased to bring you the 56th Annual Paul Bates Memorial Carbondale Holiday Tournament.  The history of this tournament features numerous State Champions, Hall of Fame Coaches, Players, Teams and Professional Basketball players.  This years field includes some of the top teams in Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and a Nationally ranked Arkansas Team.  We look to keep this wonderful history and memory of Paul Bates alive for many, many years to come.
